Frequently Asked Questions

Is organic the same as pesticide-free?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means there is little or no exposure to chemicals such as fertilizers and herbicides.

Organic produce also contains more nutrients than conventionally produced foods because it contains no harmful additives.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), requires that farmers follow strict guidelines when growing organic crops.

These guidelines include soil preparation, crop rotating, pest control and water conservation.

In addition, organic farming methods promote healthy ecosystems, which benefit wildlife and natural habitats.

What are organic food products?

Organic produce is free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, sewage sludge and confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used. Animal testing is also not done. These crops are allowed natural growth, so farmers don't use chemicals to kill pests and weeds.

Organic farming practices help maintain soil quality and reduce erosion. In addition, organics are better for our health because they contain more nutrients than conventional food. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.

Is organic food good for you?

There are two types. One is those that we grow ourselves, and the other is those that we buy from someone else. While there are exceptions, the general answer is yes to both. Organic food is healthier than conventional food because it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, pesticides or herbicides. It also doesn’t contain preservatives or genetically modified organisms.

There are many supermarkets that sell organic food across North America and Europe. Most grocery stores now carry organic food, making it easier for consumers to choose organic products.

Organic food has higher levels vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which makes it more delicious and nutritious. Organics can be grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This ensures that organics do not pollute our soil or water supply.

Organic farming is regulated by the USDA. Farmers must follow strict guidelines to ensure safe eating. There are over 30 million acres of US organic farmland.

Organic food is often more affordable than conventional food. The same amount of nutrients, calories, and protein is being offered by organic food, but consumers are often paying less. Organic farms can charge lower prices for their crops since they aren't required to pay for expensive chemical inputs such as insecticides or fungicides.

In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group, organic food costs 10 percent less per pound than conventionally produced food. Consider switching to organic foods if you are concerned about your health and the well-being of your family.

Organic food is becoming a popular option to the standard American diet. It is often believed that organic food is exclusive to specialty markets and gourmet restaurants. Organic food can be purchased in most grocery stores across the United States.

In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. In the US, organic food sales reached $43Billion in 2012, an increase of $21Billion in 2007.

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

Are organic foods healthier?

The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Some studies also suggest that eating organic food helps reduce your exposure to toxic metals, such as mercury and lead. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.

Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

What is organic meat?

Organic meat is real food grown without pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or hormones. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. This makes it safe for human consumption because there aren't any harmful chemicals in the meat.

Organic meats are healthier for our environment. We reduce the amount of pollution in our rivers, lakes, and landfills by eating organic food. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

It is best to buy organic meats locally as much as possible. Local purchases help keep more money within the community than traveling out of state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Shopping locally helps to keep American workers employed, as opposed to sending them overseas.

What are the advantages of organic farming?

Organic farming allows farmers to produce food using only natural methods. Farmers do not need to worry about harmful pesticides harming their crops or animals.

Organic farming also offers more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers help to grow healthy plants and help to reduce the amount of chemical waste produced.

Organic farming is also eco-friendly. For example, organic farming uses composting techniques to re-use nutrients in the soil. This reduces the risk of pollution and helps conserve precious resources.

Organic farming is good for the environment and increases crop yields. This is because there is much less water used during the growing season.

Organic production methods result in farmers receiving higher prices. People who are more conscious of the dangers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will eat healthier food.

This increases demand for organic food products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.

How To

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?

Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.

According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
